Qingdao's first offshore photovoltaic project, located near Aoshan Bay in Jiaozhou District, has officially received national approval. The China Energy Construction Offshore Photovoltaic Project, with a total investment of 10.2 billion yuan, is scheduled for completion by June 2025. Upon operation, the project is expected to generate approximately 1.92 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, contributing an average annual output of around 720 million yuan. This will also help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 840,000 tons each year, according to project engineer Niu Qi.

Since the beginning of 2024, Qingdao has accelerated its efforts in offshore wind and solar energy. The city signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with China Energy Construction, and the China Energy Construction Ocean Energy Research Institute has partnered with Ocean University of China to establish the Green Intelligent Offshore Engineering Technology Innovation Center. The 10.2-billion-yuan offshore photovoltaic project, which has now received national approval, is part of this broader initiative. With research platforms, infrastructure development, and a growing industrial chain, Qingdao is well-positioned to harness "green energy" from the sea, tapping into both wind and solar power.

To capitalize on the development opportunities in offshore renewable energy, Jiaozhou District, home to key companies like Qingdao Henglian Cable and Baojian Technology, is building a "wind and solar" industrial chain. "In response to the growing demand for offshore wind power, our company plans to establish a 100,000-ton casting facility. Once completed, the facility will focus on producing castings for large offshore wind turbine nacelles and hubs," said Fan Lian, General Manager of Qingdao Baojian Technology Engineering Co., Ltd.
