In 2024, Southern Power Grid Company set new records for its West-to-East power transmission, surpassing previous benchmarks for annual, monthly, and daily electricity delivery. The total power transmitted throughout the year reached 238.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), exceeding the annual target by 20.7 billion kWh, representing a 16.8% increase compared to the previous year. Clean energy made up about 81% of this total, helping reduce coal consumption by 6 million tons and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 150 million tons. The company also recorded its highest-ever monthly power delivery of 34.3 billion kWh, a 29% increase, and a peak daily transmission of 1.187 billion kWh, up 20% year-on-year.
According to statistics, the Guangzhou Electricity Trading Center facilitated 165 medium- and long-term cross-provincial and cross-regional electricity transactions, a 65% rise from the previous year. Notably, medium- and long-term trading was conducted continuously throughout 2024, allowing market participants more flexibility to adjust plans within the month. This provided greater stability to the Southern region's power market, optimizing the use of surplus electricity and better aligning with the regional electricity spot market.
Additionally, the effective operation of the electricity delivery responsibility mechanism ensured that priority plans were fully implemented. From January to December, power deliveries from Yunnan and Guizhou exceeded the planned targets by 15.7 billion kWh and 740 million kWh, respectively, marking year-on-year growth of 19.2% and 1.5%.
Renewable energy is now the largest energy source in the five southern provinces and regions, with total installed capacity surpassing 190 million kW. In 2024, Southern Power Grid helped transmit 23.6 billion kWh of surplus clean energy from western regions, contributing to the full absorption of clean energy in the Southern region.
