State Grid Corporation of China reported on January 13 that the cumulative power transmission from the Xinjiang-Zhundong to Anhui-Wannan ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current transmission project has exceeded 300 billion kilowatt-hours. In addition, the Jinsha River upstream to Hubei ±800 kV UHV DC project has entered the full stringing phase, with the entire project expected to be completed by June 2024. According to the State Grid, the total investment in grid construction for 2024 will exceed 600 billion yuan.

UHV projects involve large-scale investments, high industry added value, and span multiple sectors, including converter stations, transformers, capacitors, transmission lines, and power transmission and distribution equipment. The over 600 billion yuan investment will primarily support the construction of UHV AC and DC projects, strengthen the link between county-level grids and the larger grid, and facilitate upgrades in grid digitalization and intelligence. Additionally, Southern Power Grid reported that investments in large-scale grid equipment updates from 2024 to 2027 are expected to reach 195.3 billion yuan. Against this backdrop, companies in the relevant industry chains are poised to continue reaping the benefits.

For instance, China Xie Electrical Equipment Co., a comprehensive supplier of UHV equipment, stated that in 2024, it will contribute to the successful commissioning of projects such as the 1000 kV UHV AC project between Sichuan and Chongqing. The company also highlighted significant breakthroughs in its international business, with an increasing number of projects underway. Similarly, Parex, a key supplier of core components for converter stations in UHV DC transmission projects, noted that it is actively bidding for UHV DC projects and focusing on expanding its UHV business abroad, aiming to secure participation in international projects.

Industry experts observe that the construction and grid connection of large-scale wind and solar power bases are progressing steadily. To support the development of massive wind and photovoltaic power stations in desert, Gobi, and barren areas, and to drive the centralized development and long-distance transmission of power from these bases, the construction of UHV and supporting grid infrastructure is expected to accelerate further.
